Ariège is one of the most unspoilt and sparsely populated departments in the whole of France. Throughout the department, you will find picturesque villages and towns with a long history. Carcassonne and Mirepoix from the Middle Ages, Toulouse with its many churches and delightful shopping streets. Not to be missed are also the caves and prehistoric sites and the traces of the Cathars.
Foix is half an hour's drive from the Park. A cosy town with many streets, shops, restaurants and a castle. Just south of Foix is the medieval themed village of les Forges de Pyrène. A great day out for the whole family.
Prefer a day strolling through a beautiful city? Toulouse offers you many options. La Ville Rose has many shopping streets, many terraces and beautiful sights. This city is also known for its aerospace industry.
Just over an hour's drive takes you to the fortified city of Carcassonne. Definitely worth a visit. One of the most beautifully preserved fortified cities in the world. Dive into medieval life, enjoy the many shops and small museums.
Driving from Foix to Carcassonne, you will pass Mirepoix. It is definitely worth stopping here to admire the beautiful square. The cathedral is also well worth a visit. On one of the many terraces you can have a coffee under the gallery or have a nice lunch and enjoy the pleasant bustle.
If you drive via Montbrun towards the Pyrenees, you will arrive at Saint-Girons and Saint-Lizier via a beautiful route with views of the farmlands and mountain peaks. These villages are adjacent to each other, but are two different villages in terms of history and appearance and both well worth a visit.
In the vicinity of Château Cazalères, there are three interesting caves that are well worth a visit: grotte de Mas d'Azil, through which a road runs alongside a river. Lamboiche, a river through a cave that you can only go through by boat and le grotte de Niaux, known for its beautiful wall paintings.
