Foix

Foix is about 40 kilometres south-east of Château Cazalères. This medieval town is the capital of Ariège. Besides its cosy centre, there are several sights to visit.

Walking around the centre of Foix is like going back in time. In the old, narrow streets, the half-timbered houses are still clearly visible. Here you will find quaint shops and restaurants. The castle of Foix with its characteristic three towers dominates the town from its rocky summit. The abbey of Saint Volusien has been completely restored. As a result, today it can be admired in its full glory. Besides the castle and abbey, the extraordinary botanical gardens are also a real attraction.

The area around Foix has been inhabited for centuries. For instance, the Romans already built a fort on the hill on which the Foix Castle now stands. However, the history of the village itself only begins around AD 800, when the abbey of Saint Volusien was founded. Thanks to the presence of this abbey, the town of Foix continued to expand.

Foix: a medieval town, fun for the whole family!

Le Château de Foix: From castle to prison to museum

Around the year 1000, the castle of Foix (le Château de Foix) was built. Thanks to its strategic location, over the years this castle played an important role in the war between the Catholic Church and the Cathars. After the 15th century, however, it lost its strategic value and was converted into a prison. Today, the castle serves as a museum. It has been completely restored and is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Ariège. From its towers you have a great view over the town of Foix and the surrounding area.

Theme village Les Forges de Pyrène

Just south of Foix you will find Les Forges de Pyrène. This is a themed village entirely in the style of medieval France. Here you can learn how blacksmiths and shoemakers used to work, how people used to hunt and how bread was baked. In the accompanying museum, you will find all kinds of objects from past centuries. A great outing for the whole family. (duration approx. 3 hours)
