Mirepoix

Mirepoix is perhaps one of the most beautiful villages in Ariège. This town has about 3,000 inhabitants and is known for its beautiful and well-preserved medieval centre. It is just under an hour's drive from holiday park Cazalères.

A nice place to continue from there to Carcassonne or drive south to visit Montségur.

Enjoy the terrace on a 13th-century square

The inner city of Mirepoix

One of the other attractions is the city's central square. The layout of the square has not changed since the 13th century. Surrounding it are dozens of colourful half-timbered houses. The galleries on the first floors feature fine medieval carvings. This is evident at the 'Consul's House'. On and around the square you will find several small shops and terraces, and a traditional market is held here every Monday morning, with all kinds of fresh local produce.

During the summer months, historical festivals are organised on the main square and in the cathedral. In the third week of July, there are always folklore performances and parades through the city. The beginning of August sees the MiMa festival, a festival of puppet art where the whole town is decorated with historical puppets.

So a visit to Mirepoix is definitely worthwhile, especially in summer and on Mondays. Combine your visit a with trip to Chateau Montségur, located about 30 kilometres to the south, or to Carcassonne, further east.

The cathedral of Mirepoix: a real eye-catcher

Mirepoix is originally a bastide, a fortified town. Its history dates back to the 5th century, when it was founded by a Celtic people. Thanks to its favourable location on the river Hers, the village grew quickly. In the late 13th century, the construction of Saint-Maurice Cathedral began. It took no less than five centuries to finish this imposing structure. But the result is impressive; today the cathedral is one of Mirepoix's absolute eye-catchers.
